This is my first blog post for Management 136, and today I am going to define what I think project management is and why it is important for creating a web site. Project management is the temporary endeavor undertaken to create a service, unique product or result. A project manager sits down and devises a plan to deliver a project on time and within budget. Their job is to define cost, quality and time needed to produce the project. Projects can range from baking a cake to building a skyscraper. The amount of people to devise a project will depend on the scope and size of the project. You can guess with the two of the examples I just gave, building a skyscraper is going to take a lot more people and expertise than baking a cake. Now when it comes to creating a web site, it is imperative that you sit down and plan the project as there are many steps in creating a top notch web site. Start with a list of tasks and convert it to a tree diagram. Estimate the task time, list the risks involved and make sure the project is agreed upon by everyone involved before starting the project. Web sites can be pretty complex so it is important that everything is thought of and laid out before starting so you do not fail in building the site. The last thing you want to do is go in to it blind. The chances of completing the site are very slim if you do not have everything spelled out form the start. Many projects are terminated do to poor project management and that is not money well spent.
